Inspection and Maintenance Guide for Stainless Steel Tanks

To ensure your stainless steel tanks (especially stainless steel IBCs) remain in optimal working condition and to maximize their service life, Dalian Baoxiang recommends following these inspection and maintenance protocols.

I. Receiving and Initial Inspection

Upon delivery, please perform the following checks to ensure the quality of the tanks:

★Visual Inspection:

  • Check the surface for any scratches, dents, or deformations caused during transit.
  • Inspect the external cladding (for insulated tanks) for flatness and weld integrity.

★Internal & Weld Inspection:

  • Verify that the internal surface finish meets the ordered Ra value (roughness).
  • Welds should be smooth, free of porosity or slag, and properly passivated (appearing as a uniform silvery-white or pickled finish).

★Dimensional & Accessory Check:

  • Verify inlet/outlet sizes (e.g., DN50 Butterfly Valve), manhole specifications, and level gauge types.
  • Check all gaskets (EPDM, Silicone, or PTFE) to ensure they are properly seated and free of cracks.

★Documentation Verification:

  • Confirm the inclusion of: 3.1 Material Certificates, Factory Inspection Certificates, Pressure Test Reports, and UN Certification documents (for hazardous goods tanks).

II. Pre-use Cleaning and Passivation

Even new tanks should be cleaned before their first use:

  • Alkaline Wash: Use a 1-2% Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) solution to circulate and remove any residual oils or grease from the manufacturing process.
  • Passivation Recovery: If the tank is used in harsh environments, periodically use a passivation paste or liquid to restore the Chromium Oxide protective layer on the stainless steel tank surface.

IV. Troubleshooting Common Issues
★Surface "Tea Staining" (Light Rust):

  • Cause: Usually external iron powder contamination rather than tank corrosion.
  • Solution: Clean with a specialized stainless steel cleaner. Never use steel wool or carbon steel tools, as they will contaminate the surface.

★Difficulty Operating Valves:

  • Cause: Media crystallization or seal aging.
  • Solution: Clean the valve internals or replace the gasket with the same specification.

★Incomplete Cleaning (CIP):

  • Cause: Clogged CIP spray balls or insufficient pressure.
  • Solution: Inspect and clear the spray nozzles.

V. Safety Warnings
⚠️ Confined Space Entry: Before entering a large tank for cleaning or maintenance, you must test oxygen levels and implement a "buddy system" (one person inside, one spotter outside).

⚠️ Pressure Limits: Always operate within the Design Pressure marked on the nameplate. Overpressurization can lead to permanent structural damage or catastrophic failure.
