Stainless Steel Tank Selection Guide
I. Analysis of Storage Medium and Process Requirements
Before selection, it is essential to clarify the medium that the stainless steel tank will store or process, along with the specific process requirements.
Factors for Consideration:
- Storage Medium:Liquid / Powder / Gas?
What are the viscosity and corrosiveness?
This determines the required container raw material, internal surface finish, and sealing material.
- Temperature and Pressure:
What are the maximum and minimum operating temperatures? What is the design pressure? Is insulation required?
This determines the tank's wall thickness, structural integrity, and sealing requirements.
- Process Use:
Is the stainless steel tank intended solely for storage / transportation / mixing / fermentation / reaction / filtration?
This determines whether corresponding configurations like an agitator, insulation layer, heating/cooling jacket, or electric heating tubes need to be added.
- Hygiene Grade Requirement:
Is it for chemical grade use, or for the high-purity requirements of food, pharmaceutical, or high-purity chemical products?
This determines whether to follow sanitary standards, mirror polishing, or configurations such as CIP cleaning systems.
II. Raw Material Selection
- Painted Steel / Galvanized Steel:
Low cost. Commonly used for storing non-corrosive, non-hygienic materials such as petroleum semi-finished products or waste oil.
- SS304:
The most common and versatile material. Good corrosion resistance and moderate price. Suitable for water, milk, beer, non-acidic foods, and general chemicals.
- SS316L:
Contains added Molybdenum (Mo), offering stronger resistance to chloride corrosion and acidity. Higher price point. Suitable for marine environments, pharmaceuticals, acidic foods, and highly corrosive chemical applications.
III. BX Fully Customized Stainless Steel Tank Structure and Configuration
- Structural Elements:
Does discharge need to be fully drained? Does the tank need to withstand pressure?
This determines the choice of flat bottom / conical bottom / dished bottom.
- Jacket Type:
Determines the required efficiency and cost of heating, cooling, or insulation.
Choices include: Dimple Jacket, Coil Jacket, or Full Insulation Jacket.
- Surface Finish:
Relates to cleaning and adhesion requirements. The smoother the surface, the less adhesion, the easier the cleaning, and the higher the corresponding cost.
This determines the adoption of: 2B Matte Finish (Industrial Grade), Brushed Finish (Food Grade), or 400-grit Mirror Polishing.
- Insulation Layer:
Is precise temperature control (heating or cooling) required?
This determines whether to add insulation materials such as PU foam / glass wool, with an external stainless steel cladding.
- Connection Requirements:
Is a clamp connection, threaded connection, or flange connection required?
IV. Key Accessory Selection for Stainless Steel IBC Tanks
- Manhole:
What are the sealing requirements?
Options include: Top single-handwheel round manhole / Top multi-point locking manhole / Tank-top clip-on manhole / Tank-body elliptical manhole.
- Breather Valve / Safety Valve:
Protects the tank from overpressure or vacuum damage.
Atmospheric tanks are typically equipped with 0-0.03 mpa valves; high-pressure tanks are configured according to the operating pressure.
- Filling Port / Return Port and other Special Configurations:
Confirm whether connecting nozzles are required and if they need to be equipped with shut-off valves.
- Level Gauge:
Is it necessary to display the volume of liquid/powder inside the tank?
Options include: Glass tube type / Soft hose type / Welded type / Radar type / Hydrostatic type, etc.
- Discharge Outlet Valve:
Considerations include medium viscosity, hygiene level, and discharge speed requirements.
This determines the choice of ball valve / butterfly valve / diaphragm valve, etc., and the corresponding port size.
- CIP Configuration:
What are the tank size and hygiene requirements?
Is a CIP spray ball or an additional cleaning system required?
- Agitation System:
What is the medium viscosity and the required shear force?
Agitation methods include: paddle type, anchor type, turbine type, magnetic stirring, etc.
V. Relevant Certification and Documentation Requirements for Stainless Steel Tanks
Confirm the certification documents strictly required by local regulations, and the files you need to inspect and retain to ensure tank quality:
1. Material Certificate - 3.1 certificate
2. Supplier Quality Inspection Report
3. Third-Party Inspection Certificate
4. International Standard Certificates (e.g., ISO/UN-CCS/ CE/ PED)
5. Product Drawings
